When I went on vacation last year to Hawaii, I used two different rental car companies. One of them told me that my spouse was already covered and I did not need to pay for an extra driver since we were married. Another rental car company said that I would have to pay for her as another driver, married or not. Are spouses covered as an extra driver or is this dependent on the particular car rental company. If so, it would be great if there was a site that lists which do and which don't. Since sites like Travelocity list by individual price, the cheapest may not necessarily be the best deal if there are 2 drivers.

it varies by rental company. make sure you qualify and don't have a driver not listed and then have an accident, as that will give them an excuse to deny.

since you go online to check prices, most of the companies have 800 numbers. before you book, call the 800 number and inquire if both drivers covered in price or pay separate.

if they say you have to pay more, tell them find, that you will be looking for a rental where you don't have to pay extra. they might agree to do so to keep the business. when you do this, make sure you get the persons name and id number if they have one. this way if you show up and they said the person at the 800# was wrong and you have to pay, you can call the 800# and complain that you were sold a bag of goods.

also; make sure that when you sign the rental contract at pick up it shows your wife also on the contract as a driver, so again they cant say she was not listed.

adding the extra driver can be quite pricey. i remember when i was much younger and went with 3 other girls to florida for a week that only one was allowed to drive. i remember it was about $15 more per day to add just one driver if my memory serves me right. we hated to make her the designated driver since it was not fair to make her not drink or tee-total every time we went out.

with the economy as it is, i believe you maybe able to negotiate this just to keep your business. also when you book, call a couple of others if they don't accept. say, i could pay 5 more day at hertz for the extra driver vs paying 10 more here with the extra expense.

good luck

I just started seeing this guy for 2 months (met him online). So far things have been good; nothing to worry about- he's not wanted by the police or anything haha. I am planning a trip for spring break (end of March) to Cancun. we live in California so it is a pretty far vacation. I was wondering what you guys think about inviting him to join me and my friends (all coupled up) to go for a 5 days vacation. Recently he invited me to go to Hawaii with him and his friends over winter break (december)- I told him no.

My question is, is it too far ahead to plan in advance. By the time we're in Cancun, it will be ~6 months (if we're still together). I have to ask him soon because I like to plan early and booking early means getting better deals in terms of hotel & airfare. But I dont want to regret asking him if it turns out things dont work out. Too soon? If yes, when should I ask him? I'm confused!

How should I ask him? I'm afraid I'll scare him off by moving too fast. Be honest please!

Yes, WAY too soon. You need a LOT more time dating him to feel comfortable traveling with someone — and yet, what happens if you get 'stuck' in a foreign country.
And, btw, have you actually DONE a criminal background check on him???

I was looking to go to Hawaii. I have only looked into Priceline.com and they seem reasonable. Has anyone had any experience dealing with them? This is my first time booking a vacation and am not sure if I should buy one online or pay a little more and go to an agent. I might be going to an AAA office today but I am afraid I will just be wasting my time as they are not as cheap.

I need some advice.. thanks!

What I would do if I was in your shoes is, go to a travel agent and explain to them what you are looking for….let them find details on flights, hotels, price etc. Thank them and tell them that you will think about it. Go home, and with the information you have got from the travel agent, check online and see which is the cheapest. Lots of people do that.

My friend has been renting a parking space for over 10 years from the owner of a condo in Hawaii. Last week, the new bldg mgr approached her and told her they were no longer allowing non-tenants to park their cars in the building, citing "zoning regulations." He told her he would give her a month to find parking somewhere else. The owner my friend rents from was not notified of this change in policy and another stall renter had not heard anything either. My friend thinks the bldg mgr is trying to get rid of her so one of the two security guards can have her prime (next to both the elevator and the stairs) parking space. She previously had problems with the security guards parking in her stall when she arrived in the morning (our office is 2 blocks away) and also when she went on vacation for 2 weeks. Her owner is checking with the condo board president now, but does she really have to vacate her parking space? How should she deal with with this situation?

The manager is an employee of the condo association. If the Association has allowed the sub-letting of the car parking to your friend, then the manager does not have any authority what so ever to enforce this so called zoning law. If such a zoning regulation is in place, then the chain of command should be like this. From the Association to the owner of the condo, to your friend who is renting it. The manager has the authority to enforce such a regulation but only if he has been given a directive by the association to do so. He simply can not do this on his own whim. That is the law. Even though your friend can not do anything to him, but he can certainly ask the owner of the condo to take up the matter with the association and have them reprimand this Manager. What I can see here is just a case of some immature person who has been put in a position of authority and who is just going around bullying people because he thinks he can. People like that ought to be put in their place very quickly.

I want to take a quick vacation starting April 1 – April 6. I never travel, but I'm doing something wild before starting a new job. I need a company to arrange something quickly. I'm traveling by myself and am thinking US Virgin Islands, Hawaii as I don't have a current passport. Any suggestions. Doing it myself through Expedia, Travelocity etc. isn't really an option because I'm to busy to deal with a bunch of details.

You seem to be wanting to go to a beach and you don't want to deal with details I would recommend any one of the premium all inclusive resorts like Sandals or Hedonism ll.
Negril in Jamaica would be my personal first choice but I'm sure they have this type of resort in the U.S. Virgin Islands or Pert Rico. There you won't need a passport. Being all inclusive you don't have to sweat any of the details. The initial price may seem high at first but when you figure that meals are included as are watercraft, and other included items make it worth it. Bon Voyage you lucky dog.
